Getting product photos and publishing them to the world online can be incredibly exciting. You want what you’re displaying to be in the best light possible and have your audience like what they see. However, there are still some factors that you have to consider and balance out with the quality before posting to the web, such as the size of the image (we’ll get more into that later), and what kind of file is appropriate for the platform you’re publishing to.

When choosing how to produce and publish your e-commerce media, keep the following in mind:

You Still Have to Use The Best Equipment

The first step to getting any good product photo is using an image produced from quality equipment. This will allow for it to scale properly across multiple platforms while still looking crisp, clear, and allowing for what you’re displaying to shine.

Simply making sure that you get the right lighting will go a long way.

Use The Right File Type

Depending on whatever platform you’re looking to post on, you may want to consider the kind of file type to use. While there are a variety of image formats available, you will mainly be dealing with JPEGs (Joint Photographic Experts Group). Many use PNGs (Portable Network Graphics) as well when posting images to social media or your own website.

What you have to know about JPEG vs PNG when choosing between the two is:

  • PNG is “lossless” (keeps all of the information in the image), which makes it a good choice for showing details on small photos over the internet.
  • “Lossy files” (removes some redundant information in an image), such as JPEG are used for realistic images with a lot of detail that may slow down load times.
  • You can’t make a JPEG transparent. You may do so for a PNG.

Less Can Be More, Depending

One major factor of UX (User Experience) design when creating any website is load time. Your load time can make or break someone’s decision to stay on your website. People are used to a fast, seamless experience on whatever website they visit, and may not wait for a product image to load. Naturally, your media can be a huge hindrance to your load time. One way you can prevent this is by making the media on your websites smaller, and by utilizing “lossy” files that cut down run time by removing redundant information. Of course, you still need whatever image you display to be of high enough quality to where it won’t deter anyone.
