Overview of Product Photography

Product photography is an important part of marketing your brand and can really impact the look of your e-commerce page.  You ask “do I shoot products on a model, laying flat, use ghost photography, or do I shoot lifestyle photos?”  All of these are great choices and to be honest, you can do all of them or just one. But just make sure you stay consistant with your branding and across your e-commerce pages to give a clean look to your site.  For instance, if you have 10 products and you only use ghost photography on one product and not the others, the site can look incomplete.  If your customers compare products they will want to see how all products will look like when compared side-to-side. So it could be good to maybe test one or two products if you don’t want to use ghost photography across your entire product line and then when you have the budget, do the entire line.  The other option is to just do flat lay photography and when you have the budget add one ghost photo at one angle.

What does it look like?

Ghost Product Photography can help your products appear as if they are floating in mid-air.  This gives the product more volume, just as it would look like on a person.

Benefits:

There are various benefits to having ghost photography including not having the distraction of a model, it gives a more professional or elegant look, you can see the inside of the product as well as the outside, and it removes most wrinkles on the product.  There is also the ability to see the product from all angles.

Cost:

Ghost Product photography costs $80 per photo with 360 Product Video and stays at the price regardless of volume.  Whereas with Flat Lay product photography the cost is around $40 per photo (depending on your volume).

RECOMMENDATIONS:

We recommend having a mix of lay flat product photography, ghost product photography, and a product video showing the details of your product.  This will give a good variety of media documenting your product in detail.  Customers will also be more likely to trust your brand because of the amount of time and effort that goes into the marketing your products.  But you can always choose just one option if you are on a budget.  Just make sure the products look clean and professional and are shot by a professional photographer or an ambitious amateur!  And again stay consistant with your brand and photography is an important part of this process.
